Entry 32: Big Gaping Hole Update

It’s done!

Our new kitchen is finished! It just needs a few final touches, like, you know, walls. Also windows, cabinets, plumbing, lights and appliances. And I’m forgetting something…oh, yes, a floor!

Other than that, it’s done!

Well, okay, maybe it’s just the demolition part that’s done. Mostly.

The stalwart refrigerator, the last appliance standing, has been moved to the basement, where it will live in semi-retirement as storage for beverages and maybe a side of beef or two. Moving it was no easy task, as it had been cleverly designed to be an inch wider than the doorway. So the doors needed to be removed. Of course, we had to empty the fridge before it was moved, which led to the incident with the plastic bin I was using to take everything downstairs. It apparently could not handle the weight of the 5 gallon jug of iced tea and the handles snapped off, spilling the contents down the staircase, exploding the iced coffee container, and depositing a stick of butter at the bottom for me to step on.

Back at the construction site, we met with John and Mike, the contractors, to make an executive decision regarding the ceiling and, after some debate, we decided to have one. No, actually, the decision was to eliminate the incline up to the tray ceiling in favor of straight, squared off corners. This was to make it easier to light the room, but I was thinking I’d have to cancel the dinner I had planned for NBA players because they’d be more likely to bump their heads.

So, anyway, here’s where we stand right now: far away down the hall, on the other side of plastic curtain. That is where Barbara and I stand. I have no idea what they’re doing in there. For all I know, they’re going to pull down the plastic in a couple of weeks and we’re going to find that they’ve constructed a Starbucks. That would be horrible, since I prefer Dunkin’ Donuts.

Meanwhile, life goes on, mostly on paper plates. I must say, environmental issues aside, I could get used to cleaning the table after dinner by tilting the table slightly and allowing everything to slide into a garbage bag. Of course, it would be nice to be able to cut my food without having the knife break, but, hey, the sacrifices we make. In fact, the other night we met our real estate professional, Nancy and her husband Tom (who painted our house) at the local Mexican fast food place and we seriously considered swiping a bunch of plastic utensils because they seemed a bit stronger than what we’ve been using.

See you soon.
